Open Licenses
Caption: Open licenses are a set of conditions applied to an original work that grant permission for anyone to make use of that work as long as they follow the conditions of the license.

Caption: Attribution means that others can use your work if they credit you. Share Alike means that others can distribute your work only under a license identical to the one you have chosen for your work. No Derivatives means that others can only use verbatim copies of your work. Non-Commercial means that others can use your work but for non-commercial purposes only.
At the heart of how open educational resources work is open licensing. Part of the definition of OER states that these materials are licensed in a manner that provides free and perpetual permissions to use them.
Creative Commons has developed the most widely-used model for open licensing (shown above). These licenses, when applied to a resource by its owner, tell people how they are allowed and not allowed to use the resource.
